Copywriting Essentials
There are few things more important to online marketers than quality copywriting. If you are in the process of creating a website for sales or informational purposes, you will have almost no success if you don't first give serious thought to the type of content your site will offer. Though some believe that copywriting involves no more thought than other forms of writing, the truth is that successful copywriting is both a science and an art form, and often requires a degree of thoughtfulness that goes beyond other writing styles.
Copywriting is a strategic writing style that involves the use of powerful words to sell the reader on products, concepts, and personalities. While it is true that all forms of writing attempt to elicit certain emotional or intellectual responses from readers, copywriting is somewhat unique in that it most often attempts to elicit a response that involves action. That action often involves the purchase of a product, or support for a person or idea.
Those who take up copywriting as a profession are compensated handsomely for their efforts when they are successful at their craft. Often times, these writers are among the large class of freelance writers who are available for hire if the price is right, but still others belong to the settled class of copywriters who provide copywriting services on a continual basis to the same company or companies. Smart companies understand that the rates these specialists charge are well worth the product they produce, since the difference between substandard copy and professional copywriting work can be measured in terms of the revenue lost or gained.
The most important aspect of copywriting for the internet is search engine optimization, or SEO, copywriting. SEO is a unique form of writing that requires the writer to have two specific audiences in mind. The first audience is the human one, and appealing to that audience requires the creation of engaging copy that keeps the readers' attention. The second audience is the search engines that assist potential visitors in finding a particular site. Appealing to this audience is where the science of copywriting comes into play, as successful copywriters must juggle the demands of keywords and keyword strings even as they write the interesting copy that visitors want to read.
Although copywriting involves a focus on a number of key writing issues, there is little doubt that quality headlines rank as first among equals on the list. The reason for this is simple, and every salesman knows it by heart: any attempt to persuade a reader succeeds or fails within the first few seconds. In the case of copywriting, a poor title offers readers no reason to invest their time in the rest of the copy. As a rule, the purpose of any headline is to get the reader to read the first sentence of the website copy or article, the purpose of the first sentence is to get the reader to read the second, and the purpose of the second is to get the reader to read the third - and so on. Good copywriters understand this, which is precisely why their copywriting skills remain in such high demand.

I have done some reasearch on copywriting. It seems to be a very interesting and profitable career field. However, I have no clue on how anyone would go about starting a career in this field. I am particularly interested in freelance copywriting. I was wondering if anyone out here had any good advice or tips on how to start out in this business. I would like to start on a part time basis doing freelance work and hopefully take it from there.
